History of The Gold Buffalo
The Gold Buffalo is not quite as old as a lot of other gold coins in the world today. It first began its circulation in 2006 and has been very popular ever since. The coin’s design, much like the American Gold Eagle coin, was taken from a coin that was in circulation in the past. The Gold Buffalo is modeled after the Indian Head Nickel, a coin that was circulated in the United States from 1913 until 1938. The Gold Buffalo is called as such because the reverse side of the coin it has the image of an American Bison, more commonly referred to as the Buffalo.
Design and Details
James Earl Fraser was the man behind the design of the Indian Head Nickel, and that image is taken and used on the Gold Buffalo. Fraser’s coin design is touted as being one of the most beautiful and culturally significant coin designs out of an US coin. The Bison that is pictured on the coin is not a generic image either. According to folklore the Buffalo on the coin is named Black Diamond and she made her home in New York’s Central Park Zoo. The obverse side of the coin was also designed by Fraser and has the picture of a Native American. Fraser designed the Native American to resemble members of the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons tribes. The inscription of the word “Liberty” can be found on the obverse side as well. Inscriptions on the reverse side of the coin are “United States of America”, and “1oz. .9999 Fine Gold.”
The Gold Buffalo, unlike many other coins, comes solely in one size and is offered at a face value of $50. The diameter of the Gold Buffalo is 32.7mm.
Buy Gold Buffalo
Investors and collectors alike scour the States and the world for these coins with such vigor because there is a very limited amount of coins minted each year (300,000). Since there is such a small amount of the coins available, each and every year the coin is sought after more and more. The coin is made entirely of gold and that makes it alluring to both investors and collectors. Since it is relatively new to the world coin market, there is a very high demand for this precious coin. When looking to buy a Gold Buffalo, North American dealers will probably be your best bet.
